"With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan ~ to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."

So goes Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, delivered 41 days before his assassination. With the end of the brutal Civil War in sight, people on both sides felt anger and frustration toward fellow Americans. Lincoln sought to rise above this divide and start the process of healing.

Throughout the speech, he uses the words "us" and "we" instead of "me" and "I"—another reminder that we as Americans are a team, united, strongest together. He is pictured here on the evening of April 14 on his way to the Ford Theater. This was his "last night out"—but for his legacy of togetherness, justice, and freedom, for which he is widely celebrated as America's favorite President, it was only the beginning.
